Role Overview
The Marine Mechanical Technician is responsible for the hands-on maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, installation, and modification of propulsion and mechanical systems across Marcurius unmanned maritime platforms. This role supports prototype builds, vessel preparation, sea trials, field testing, and the continued development of reliable, deployable USV systems.
The successful candidate will bring strong practical experience with internal combustion engines and related mechanical, electrical, fuel, cooling, exhaust, charging, and control systems. You will work closely with engineers, operators, and other technicians to diagnose faults, complete repairs, install new components, and return vessels to safe operational condition quickly and accurately.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and rebuild internal-combustion engines, propulsion systems, and associated marine mechanical equipment.
- Diagnose faults across fuel, air-intake, ignition, cooling, lubrication, exhaust, starting, charging, steering, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical-control systems.
- Inspect, install, adjust, and replace mechanical and electromechanical components, including pumps, actuators, servos, solenoids, motors, alternators, generators, and compressors.
- Perform preventive maintenance, scheduled inspections, fluid and filter changes, battery and charging checks, and component replacement.
- Use technical manuals, diagrams, drawings, and diagnostic equipment to complete repairs accurately and identify root causes.
- Support prototype builds, vessel modifications, production troubleshooting, launch and recovery, sea-trial preparation, field testing, and post-trial repairs.
- Document faults, measurements, parts used, corrective actions, and recommendations clearly for engineering and operational teams.
- Maintain vessels, tools, workshop equipment, spares, and consumables in a safe, organized, and deployable condition while following all company safety, quality, security, and export-control requirements.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on experience maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, or rebuilding internal-combustion engines in a marine, automotive, powersports, diesel, small-engine, fleet, or industrial-equipment environment.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose complex engine and mechanical-system faults with limited supervision.
- Working knowledge of propulsion, fuel, cooling, lubrication, exhaust, starting, charging, steering, and basic electrical and sensor systems.
- Practical knowledge of electromechanical components and 12V/24V DC systems, including batteries, wiring, connectors, fuses, circuit breakers, and charging circuits.
- Ability to read service manuals, wiring and parts diagrams, assembly drawings, and maintenance procedures, and to use common diagnostic and repair tools.
- Ability to perform preventive maintenance, repairs, component replacement, and accurate work documentation.
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, U.S. work authorization, and ability to satisfy applicable defense, security, and export-control requirements.
Preferred Experience
- Marine, personal-watercraft, outboard, inboard, stern-drive, jet-drive, or small-craft propulsion experience, including Yamaha, Sea-Doo, Kawasaki, Mercury, Suzuki, Honda Marine, Volvo Penta, Cummins, or similar platforms.
- Relevant technical-school training or certification in marine, automotive, diesel, motorcycle, powersports, or small-engine maintenance.
- Experience troubleshooting engine-related electrical components, sensors, harnesses, charging and starting circuits, fuel and ignition systems, engine-control modules, gauges, and alarms.
- Experience supporting prototype builds, vehicle modifications, production troubleshooting, field testing, sea trials, or new-product integration.
- Additional hands-on skills in welding, fabrication, fiberglass, aluminum, rigging, machining, hydraulic or pneumatic systems, or general mechanical assembly.
- Experience with unmanned or remotely operated systems, NMEA 2000, CAN bus, vessel-monitoring or PLC/control systems, plus boat-handling experience or an operator credential.
Work Environment
- Primarily onsite at Marcurius facilities in Clearwater, Florida
- Regular activity in workshops, marinas, docks, boat ramps, waterways, and coastal test areas
- Direct involvement in prototype builds, vessel maintenance, launch preparation, sea trials, and operational demonstrations
- Fast-paced development environment with changing priorities and aggressive timelines
- Close cooperation with engineers, operators, technicians, suppliers, and customers
- Domestic travel may be required for testing, demonstrations, supplier support, or operational activities
